Building Blocks Of Every Outfit – Wardrobe Basics

Wondering why you’re constantly staring into your wardrobe, struggling to put outfits together and need to refresh? Here’s a breakdown of all the wardrobe basics you need so you can say goodbye to those ‘I have nothing to wear’ days.

THE BLAZER

An instant fix for my ‘what jacket do I wear’ dilemma. Blazers have come a long way – from strictly corporate to cool, effortless and casual street style. I have a strong hold on the idea that everyone should own a blazer that is well fitted to their taste (I don’t mean slim fitting, just flattering – I go for a slightly boyfriend-blazer type) to throw over anything and everything. It’s no secret that my favourite blazers are by Camilla & Marc, and my go-to combo is with jeans and a plain tee, dressed up with heels, or down with sneakers. Versatility ✓✓✓

THE TEE

Only this year did I realise how much I was lacking in the tee department – both plain and branded. Tees are essential so find what style and colour palette you want and stock up – for me it’s crew necks in black, grey, white, and stripes. Tip: get multiple colours of your fave style, and then get multiples in the same colour because there’s always going to be that time your top is in the wash or dirty and another one just won’t do. ?

THE CAMI

See above. Another essential – especially for Summer. Stock up again in different colours, and try out different styles from v-neck, cowl, and other on-trend styles with criss-cross details, tie-up straps or off-the-shoulder attachments. Also try out different materials to take you from day (jersey, ribbed, knitted) to night (satin, sequin, glitter).

THE KNIT

A great knit can transform any standard outfit into something else. Grab them in neutrals as well as bold statement styles with pom poms, raw hem details or starry prints. Throw them over dresses for in-between weather, pair with straight leg denim and heels for a friendly dinner, or layer under jackets for the Winter months.

THE SHIRT

Something I’ve only just recently incorporated into my wardrobe, and has admittedly been dearly missed for years. I talked about how versatile they can be in this post, so find one that fits perfectly and go beyond wearing it as a classic button up – try styling it off-shoulder, backwards, tied up, or as a tube-top. The world is your oyster ?

THE SKINNY DENIM

The basic of all basics. If you’re going to own one pair of pants, make these your go-to to easily go from day to night. Tip: If your old pairs need a little refresh, don’t be afraid to come at them with scissors and give them some raw hems for ultimate IT girl status.

THE STRAIGHT LEG DENIM

The comfy jeans, for when you still want to keep the booty and pins looking good in some denim but also don’t want to have to unzip your jeans after dinner. ? Hard to find the perfect fit but so, so worth it when you do.

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

If you get a super simple LBD like this one from Glassons – with a straight neckline that isn’t too low nor high and made from lightweight linen – it can take you from day to night effortlessly. Slip on over tees and pair with sneakers and a denim jacket, or strap on your highest of heels for a night out –  the LBD can be one of your easiest outfits yet.

THE ANKLE BOOT

Flat or heeled, they go with almost anything and will take you anywhere, especially when in black. When it comes to going out – I’m still loving the sock boot trend (although I admittedly hated it at first), as well metallic silver block heels for when you need to add a statement feature to your outfit.

THE SNEAKER

When it comes to sneakers, I always go for black or white. My favourite is a platform pair of low-cut Converse that I’ve been wearing to death for the past few years because I’m yet to find an outfit they don’t go with.
